Below Average

Jagapathi Babu has portrayed the role of a cop in several films. He comes up once again with a cop role. Let us see how he fares in this new film Chattam.

Story:

Jagapathi Babu is a inspector in Punjagutta police station. He along with his subordinate constable Jeeva resorts to unlawful activities like settlements and collections.

Jagapathi Babu is a corrupt and careless inspector whose only aim is to extort as much money as possible from offenders and criminals and then hit the bottle at night.

When two students of the same college throw acid on two fellow girl students for not accepting their love, Jagapathi Babu just registers a case but does not do much to bring the guilty to book.

Similar is the case when baby Vaishnavi is kidnapped and brutally killed by throwing her into a furnace. A honest citizen Rao Ramesh is shown seething with anger. The two acid attackers as well as the kidnappers of Vaishnavi are killed brutally by some unidentified person.

A CBI enquiry is ordered and Mukul Sharma comes from Delhi to investigate the case. When he starts investigating the case a starling fact comes to light. The killer is identified. It is none other than inspector Jagapathi Babu.

Just when Mukul Sharma gets ready to arrest Jagapathi Babu he runs away to Mumbai. What is the need for Jagapathi Babu to go to Mumbai. Why does he get arrested deliberately and go to jail?

The reason why Jagapathi Babu gets himself arrested is to kill Hasab (Kasab) the lone surviving terrorist in the Mumbai terror attack case. Can Jagapathi accomplish his mission and kill Hasab who is lodged in high security bombproof cell?

The rest of the story is how Jagapathi Babu goes about his job.

Performance:

Jagapathi Babu fits the role of a cop perfectly. He has done it several times before so there is nothing new or challenging for him in this film. Jagapathi Babu tries to evoke laughter but the comedy falls flat.

Vimala Raman plays the role of Jeeva's daughter who runs a gym. She appears in a couple of dream songs and a couple of scenes with Jagapathi Babu. That's it. There is nothing much for her to do in the film. Vimala exposes a lot and manages to get some cats calls from the frontbenchers. Rao Ramesh has got a very small role but he manages to impress.

Jeeva is okay as a constable. Mukul Sharma does a good job as a CBI officer. Ashish Vidyarthi plays inspector Hemant Karkare who was killed by the terrorists. Chalapathi Rao plays as a police commissioner.

Erasu Prathap Reddy appears in a guest role as the Home Minister of Maharashtra.

Analysis:

The film gets off to a slow start. While the first half is just light hearted with nothing much happening the second half is heavy. There is very little by way of entertainment. The flash back love story of Jagapathi Babu and Geetha Singh is pretty ordinarily with Jagapathi Babu and his friends wearing strange looking wigs and sporting bright floral pattern shirts. The production values are okay.

The director tries to infuse some patriotism in the audience with the subject of terror attack in Mumbai and the way Kasab is being treated by the government. The film ends with Jagapathi Babu giving a brief speech on the country's judicial system and its loopholes.

Verdict:

Chattam is the film gets off to a slow start. While the first half is just light hearted with nothing much happening the second half is heavy. The film is neither a routine entertainer nor is it a serious crime story. The director tries to make a mix and match but fails completely. The film has very little content to appeal to the average film buff. Even Vimala Raman's sexy show fails to lift the mood of the audiences.
